Meridian has given us an excellent CD player in the new G08, and several high end DVD players featuring DVD-Audio and DVD-Video such as the new G98 DVD Player or the top-of-the-line 800 Reference DVD Player. Sony, Arcam and Meridian currently take the position that you can't design a high-end digital source that combines DVD with SACD without compromising either sound quality or affordability. The Meridian G08 is a prime example of this trend and I am using it throughout this review as a reference.
A number of manufacturers have picked up the challenge and introduced new CD players of such outstanding quality that the superiority of 2-channel DVD-Audio or SACD over Redbook is not the slam-dunk we once thought. Should I get a CD player or an SACD player or a Universal player? My review last year of the Esoteric DV-50 convinced me that you can have it all - at a price. No, my personal dilemma is what kind of digital source to buy. But I think it's obvious that the effects have been exaggerated.I've been struggling with weighty questions of late - not which way to vote, whether I feel safe in a jet once again nor even boxers or briefs. I would be surprised if some things did *not* need some initial time to break in. Then there's always the opportunity for faulty logic, for instance, this tube amp sounds better after it's warmed up 5 minutes, thus it would sound even better warmed up for 5 hours, and thus its ultimate sound would be realized if I never turned it off at all. The mind, once it latches onto an idea, does not want to let go. X informs him, Oh, that is a common experience as the cables need a month or so to settle in then you are sure to love them. Z is disappointed with them, thinks they sound worse if anything than his $3 pair, and before sending them back for a refund calls up X. The story goes that manufacturer X sells a $300 set of interconnects to buyer Z, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. My understanding of break-in from reading posts on the subject is that the concept started with unscrupulous ultra-high-dollar wire retailers, primarily for interconnects. I left it on all night at low volume went down there this morning and the difference is readily apparent. PS yesterday afternoon I finished recapping a MC240 and a friend was here we both surmised that it was very bright with the new Mix of caps installed no other changes this after a few hours of being on. Heck the expansion and contraction of every component in the amp every time the unit is turned on/off has to have some effect on at least some of the components. Can I explain it with scientific facts nope? But it obviously happens to some extent and not deniable from my perspective at least.
They actually sound very harsh and almost hyper detailed when first fired up but settle into a great warm detailed sound with use. I'm sure these changes I'm guessing about are small to any given part in the circuit but when you add them up with all the components and tubes it has to do something.Īuricaps seem to have the biggest break-in time of anything I have used. The listener getting used to the sound and the entire circuit settles down to a somewhat stable state.
I think the effects of break-in are two fold. Then it gets jolted to life with the above voltages and signal there has to be some kind of physical effect on its inner properties. When you think about a brand new capacitor that has never seen 400+ volts and AC music signal running through it. I tend to surmise that it is mostly in the capacitor realm for the most part. Not to argue with my mentor I realize that break-in is not a drastic change but I still believe it indeed happens.
